This course, part of a two-course introductory series, extends the topics covered in the Pleasure Craft Operators Card and focuses on safe boat handling skills. Topics include the responsibilities of the operator and crew, handling emergencies, collision avoidance rules, understanding rope and lines, tying knots, anchoring safety, docking and undocking techniques, obtaining marine weather information, understanding weather systems and hazards,ย and using tide and current tables when cruising in coastal waters.
Each section includes course notes, which can be downloaded electronically or printed in booklet format, instructional videos, skill-testing quizzes and practice exercises, and links to supplementary resources, including web-based links and videos related to each topic.
The course is offered online/virtual or in a classroom (where available). It is delivered in seven weekly sessions (approx. 90 minutes) and an additional 1 to 2 hours for preparation. A final exam is also available. (Note: The number and duration of sessions may vary at the discretion of the instructor team)
