This course, part of a two-course introductory series, builds on the topics covered in the Pleasure Craft Operators Card study guide. It introduces the navigation skills required to plan and cruise safely. Navigation topics include understanding the global coordinate systems and Aids to Navigation, using a compass, charting and plotting courses using paper charts, and setting up and executing cruises using electronic navigation devices (i.e., chartplotters, a computer or app-based software). Quizzes and charting exercises allow participants to practice and test these navigation skills. Improves understanding of these topics, focuses on boat handling and introduces navigation skills.
Each section includes course notes, which can be downloaded electronically or printed in booklet format, instructional videos, skill-testing quizzes and practice exercises, and links to supplementary resources, including web-based links and videos related to each topic.ย ย Participants must complete the cruise exercises with a chartplotter or tablet/phone navigation app. The course provides options for purchasing apps starting at $14.00. The course can be either a single-week course or two shorter courses.
The course is offered online/virtual or in a classroom (where available). It is delivered in eight weekly sessions (approx. 90 minutes) and an additional 1 to 2 hours for preparation. A final exam is also available. (Note: The number and duration of sessions may vary at the discretion of the instructor team).ย
